Skateboards and Skateboarding - Why Should You Bother? Why is it that some people don't seem to be able to get into team sports? There must be a reason why certain children and adults decide to ignore the possibilities available in football, basketball and baseball and instead look at solo sports such as skateboarding and snowboarding. Regardless of the reasons it has been proven that solo sports such as skateboarding can rapidly improve confidence levels and feelings of self esteem. This can later allow those who took to the skateboard due to a lack of self confidence to go on to team sports in the future should they choose to do so. Skateboards themselves have been around for decades now and what at one time was thought to be a bit of a short term fad has turned out to be a sporting phenomenon. Who would have thought that a sport that involves an oversized rollerskate would eventually become a professionally organized global event with full TV coverage the world over? One of the things people don't seem to realise is just how fit you need to be to ride a skateboard successfully, without considering the possibility of competing in one of the many worldwide skateboard tournaments. I know many a parent who is horrified at the thought of their son or daughter attempting tricks on their skateboards through fear of them badly injuring themself or even worse. Even though due to the popularity of skateboarding there are many items of protective equipment available, it has become popular among the skateboarders communities to shun the wearing of such gear, as it earmarks you as a novice. While this may be okay for the more experienced skateboarders, it is a very dangerous practice to follow for the novice or intermediate skateboarder. In fact, it's strongly recommended that you follow the guidelines set in the huge American Tournaments, where full protective skateboarding equipment, including helmets is compulsory. We've all seen the horrific videos of people having accidents on css skateboards,... some resulting in major injuries,... so it's important to remember these incidents when looking at taking up skateboarding as a sport. The great news is though, so long as you use appropriate safety equipment and take care to be patient whilst learning, you can have many many years of great fun with skateboards whether you're young or old. The popularity of this sport is evident with all the skate parks that have popped up around the country, which allow a much safer environment for people to find their feet in the sport, instead of local park benches and railings. I would say that, all in all, skateboarding provides a great solution to getting out of the house and enjoying sports without having to organize a large group of people beforehand. It's a great alternative to skateboarding video games, made famous by Tony Hawk and EA Sports and allows the much needed aerobic activity lacking in so many American's daily routine.
